What You'll Do

What You'll Do

You will own Avalara's India benefits portfolio — ensuring programs are compliant, competitive, and felt positively by the ~2,400 employees who rely on them. As a seasoned member of the Global Benefits team, you'll navigate the complexity of India's evolving Labour Code landscape, drive the annual benefits renewal cycle, build smarter ways of working through AI and automation, and serve as a trusted partner to Payroll, Finance, and People teams. This is a high-ownership role for someone who combines regulatory depth with the initiative to improve how benefits are delivered, not just administered.

About the Team

Come and be part of the Global Benefits Team! We are a truly global team working together to design and deliver benefits programs that are competitive, compliant, and people-first. In India, we are navigating an exciting period of change with the Labour Codes transformation, and this role sits at the heart of that work

What Your Responsibilities Will Be

Key Responsibilities

Annual Renewals

  • Own the end-to-end India benefits renewal cycle — timelines, carrier negotiations, plan design reviews and Workday testing etc.
  • Evaluate plan performance using utilization data and prepare management summaries with clear recommendations.

Payroll Inputs & Vendor Management

  • Serve as the primary Benefits-to-Payroll interface, ensuring accurate and timely submission of all India benefits inputs
  • Reconcile deductions against vendor invoices, manage payroll cut-off calendars
  • Own the full vendor lifecycle for India benefits partners, onboarding, SLA monitoring, invoice processing, budget tracking, and renewals.
  • Lead RFP and evaluation processes; prepare commercial comparisons to support data-driven decisions.

Employee Engagement & wellbeing

  • Act as the first point of contact for India employee benefits and absence queries; resolve or route to the appropriate TPA, broker, or team.
  • Drive proactive communications and events (open enrollment, office hours, new hire sessions) across all India entities.

Absence Management

  • Administer all absence programs i.e. Privilege leave, Casual/Sick Leave, Maternity/Paternity, statutory leaves and holidays in Workday for India; manage escalations, encashment processing, and statutory accruals.
  • Ensure policies stay compliant with evolving regulations and run regular data audits to maintain Workday accuracy.

Audit & Statutory Filing

  • Own India benefits compliance filings and conduct regular Workday-to-vendor reconciliations.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and maintain documentation for internal and external audits.

What You'll Need to be Successful

Education & Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in any field required; HR, Business Administration, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in benefits administration or total rewards with demonstrated end-to-end ownership of benefits programs.
  • Proven experience operating with a high degree of independence; this role requires someone who can manage day-to-day work without close supervision
  • Hands-on experience with India statutory benefits and compliance
  • Track record of managing vendor relationships and leading or contributing to renewal and RFP processes.

Skills & Competencies

  • Proficient in Workday (benefits/HCM) and MS Office, particularly Excel.
  • Comfortable with AI tools (Glean, n8n, Copilot) for automating workflows, drafting content, and surfacing insights — with a mindset to keep building fluency.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills; able to translate data into clear recommendations and engage credibly at all levels.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage competing priorities across complex, compliance-heavy workstreams

At Avalara, we expect this role to work with AI, not just alongside it. You are someone who reaches for Glean before writing a first draft, uses n8n or similar tools to automate repetitive data tasks, and treats AI-generated outputs with the same critical eye you'd apply to any vendor deliverable. You don't need to be an engineer — but you are curious, self-directed, and actively building your AI fluency
